Hwy 13 is a primary corridor for goods moving between greater Minnesota and port facilities. Maintaining reliable, safe, and efficient flow along Hwy 13 to I-35W is important to Minnesota’s economy. Current Issues - Capacity: One of the highest four-lane divided highway volumes in the metro area. Current volumes exceed capacity of a four-lane divided highway.
- Connectivity: Serves as the connection between I-35W and Hwy 169 to the Ports of Savage, where over five percent of the nation’s grain is shipped.
- Commerce: Only non-IRC / non-freeway carrying this magnitude of heavy commercial traffic.
- Hwy 13 Corridor is served by multiple modes of transportation: trucking industry, Union Pacific Railway, Canadian Pacific Railway, Minnesota River, and Minnesota Valley Transit.
Proposed Project - Burnsville, Savage, Dakota, Scott County have completed an access management study to improve traffic flow and access to ports.
- Currently, the project team is working to complete EA and geometric layout.
- The City of Savage is working on access management projects to improve current traffic flow.
Alliance Goals - TH 13 corridor between I-35W and TH 169 needs to be identified in the Metro Council Transportation Policy Plan.
- Complete design plans and support MnDOT investing more funding resources into management corridors.
