One of the highest Bus Rapid Transit ridership corridors in the metro area is on I-35W North of 46th Street to Downtown Minneapolis. Adding a Bus Rapit Transit lane north of 46th Street would benefit I-35W and Cedar express buses and carpools. Coupled with access improvements to Lake Street and other arterials, overall mobility is optimized. Current Issues - Crash rate on I-94 between legs of I-35W is the highest in the metro region in the p.m. and second in a.m. peaks.
- I-35W north of 46thStreet experiences congestion in both directions during a.m. and p.m. peak hours.
- I-94 and I-35W Interchange has the highest volume of traffic of any interchange in the metro area. Continuity
- Lack of continuous transit lanes or HOV to downtown Minneapolis.
- Lack of interim access to freeway transit routes –difficult connections to local service and pedestrian access to adjacent areas.
Proposed Project - Capacity: Provide transit advantages and transit stations along this segment of I-35W –improve access, connectivity, and ridershippotential.
- Improve interchange of I-94 and I-35W –improve capacity, flow, and safety.
- Continuity: Accommodate HOV and transit demand from TH 62 to downtown Minneapolis.
- Connectivity: Better align access needs with the business and residential districts.
Alliance Goals This project is currently identified in the Metropolitan Council Transportation Policy Plan to prioritize project based on state goals and targets, place in the 10 year work plan, and fund by 2015.
